Lefty On the Issues

Lefty On the Issues

The next President of the United States will face many difficult challenges. Among them will be restoring our moral standing in international affairs, ensuring that all Americans have equal access to healthcare, reducing our dependence on non-sustainable foreign sources of energy and addressing global warming, reducing the growing income gap between the wealthiest Americans and the working class and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

It is not sufficient for us to simply wait for someone else to address these challenges. If we want to live in a moral and just America tomorrow, we must work together and lead the way towards that America today. Here are some of the important steps I believe we need to make in order to do that.

Agriculture

As Lefty saw first hand, one of America's greatest treasures is its land and farms. We need to protect our ever shrinking family farms. It is important that America safeguards what helped build America into the great nation it is today. Lefty has proposed tax credits and incentives to small family farms to help keep them in business. With rising land values, higher costs, and increased competition, it is becoming harder and harder for smaller family farms to stay afloat. It is imperative that family farms have the opportunity and motivation to remain a vibrant part of the American society and economy.

Education

Growing up as a donkey one of the issues that troubled Lefty the most was the lack of choices available to a donkey. Due to this, Lefty supports increased funding for education of donkeys. Donkeys deserve the same opportunities as all Americans. This is why Lefty proposes an increase in the Donkey Scholarship, which gives donkeys a leg up in being able to afford college. With the ever increasing price of tuition, this scholarship is critical. Lefty also will work to increase funds to schools with trouble obtaining the educational materials needed to give donkeys the education they deserve. Lefty will also work tirelessly to support the efforts to start a donkey’s education early. Programs such as Early Start and pre-kindergarten education should be funded to provide the kind of base needed to keep our education system strong.

End the Slaughter of Horses for Meat

One of the issues that helped Lefty decide whether he would run for President is the slaughter of horses for human food. All horse and quadruped work animals should be spared the slaughter house for human consumption. Lefty has always believed that farm work animals are meant for just that: work in and around the farm. It was the work on the farm and on the road that allowed Lefty to interact with humans who gave him the perspective needed to run for President.

If Lefty's colleagues on the farm were slaughtered prematurely, the farm would not have been able to accomplish as much work as it did. It is this value of teamwork that Lefty will bring to the White House. We as Americans will not be able to accomplish what is most important to us if we continue the partisan divisions that not only limits government but pits American against American.

Energy: It's the Wind

Lefty believes the United States should enact federal legislation to require 20% of our electrical energy to come from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass energy, by 2020.

Lefty first learned of the power of renewable energy on a trip with six family members to West Texas to attend a chili cook-off. Just outside of Lubbock, a stiff wind came up and blew two of Lefty’s cousins away. (No one said being made of foam rubber was easy.) Neither have been heard of since, but Lefty learned the power of the wind, and he wants to put that power to work for a cleaner energy future for all Americans.

Extend Labor Laws to Donkeys

As a pull donkey, Lefty traveled far and wide in this country. Lefty has met many people and been through many situations. Since Lefty was young, he had been expected to work morning, noon, and night. Just like human labor laws, Lefty believes we need donkey labor laws. There should be fair pay, reasonable hours, and a five day work week. For all work done beyond this they should receive their meal and a half payment. Lefty knows this kind of treatment would improve the work product of many work animals and help with the movement of commerce on a national level.
